Snurfer Design & Prototyping
For this project I set out to design and fabricate a repeatable snurfboard using CAD and CAM software. Using the 3-axis CNC in the Portland State Materials Lab, I wanted to mill a fiberglass mold out of foam. I first designed the board in Solidworks. The design features a floaty nose, channels for better hold and rocker through the whole board for better float in powder. After being milled, the mold was glassed, painted and finished. So far I have only finished the mold, but I will continue the project once time allows. I plan to fabricate the board through a vacuum bagging process similar to that used on boat parts. The board will be comprised of 10 layers of 6 Oz S-Cloth with carbon fiber support strips running under foot. The layup will be bonded with epoxy resin (Resin Research 2000)
