Surfboard Design With this project I set out to design a set of three surfboards for smaller and weaker surf. I wanted to design boards that had enough volume to excel in small surf while still maintaining a high level of responsiveness. All three boards feature a deep single concave into vee near the tail. The concave is necassary to reduce drag and increase speed once up and planing. The vee in the tail works as a trailing fin to provide hold and easier rail to rail transitions. Displacing most the foam under the chest allowed for the boards to paddle well despite their short stature. The rails follow an 80/20 down rail profile before transitioning to a more modern hard rail behind the fins. Taking this approach with the rails provides a thinner and more responsive feel, that of a modern shortboard. Shapping, glassing and finishing the boards by hand taught me a lot about working with foam and fiberglass as a medium. The whole process gave me a greater appreciation for the art of boardbuilding.
